Derval was a native of Westmoreland Parish. Born to Colvin and Beryl Ireland on March 10th 1944, He was the first born son to the couple. Derval was the 4th child of 10. At the age of 17 he migrated from the countryside of Jamaica to England. He was to be met by his eldest sister Faye who was studying Nursing there. However, unbeknownst to his family, Faye had been relocated to Canada to complete her studies. The telegram informing Derval’s mother of the change arrived a few days after his departure.
Fortunately, his mother had given him the address of a family acquaintance. This would be his emergency contact in the event something went awry with meeting his sister. Beryl Ireland was a very intuitive woman!
Though the adjustment was challenging Derval continued to work very hard and eventually created a successful life for himself and his family. Building this grand estate was one of his greatest life accomplishments. It was his dying wish that this home and the entire Ireland Family Estate at Sweet River remain in the family for generations, and that this special place would be shared amongst family and friends for years to come.
